With love’s light wings did I o’erperch these walls…
What comes of that endeavour could be witnessed by students of the Q11 and 12 and a few 10th form Shakespeare aficionados on December 12th.
The White Horse Theatre Group, a travelling troupe of actors just like in Shakespeare’s time but with an impeccable reputation, put on Romeo and Juliet for us in our gymnasium and managed to perform 21 roles with 4 actors and yet only minor changes to the plot. So within seconds a servant became the nurse; Mercutio turned into Friar Lawrence. Language was a feast rather than a problem, with a few students commenting that ‘the beautiful sound of it all’ made up for some confusion caused by the twisted plot.
Within 90 minutes people fell in love, crossed swords, poisoned themselves and others to finally end up dead in a tomb, all accompanied by the servants and Mercutio cracking typically Shakespearian dirty jokes through double entendres.
Talking to the actors after the play, the students learned to their surprise that it had taken the actors just short of a week to memorize their multiple roles.
Hopefully, everybody enjoyed themselves enough to want more,
… for never was a story of more woe
than this of Juliet and her Romeo
